OPEN CALL FOR ARTISTS 2018-2019

The Fondazione Spinola Banna per l’Arte and the Galleria d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Torino, in the light of the excellent results achieved over the past two editions, will conclude the tree-year collaboration project by putting out a call for the selection of five young artists. The 2018-2019 edition of the annual programme of workshops with residency and events dedicated to artists under 35 working on the national and international territory constitutes an opportunity for reflection and drawing conclusions, with a view to bringing back the attention on art to the dimension of the creative moment, to the expressive potential that is unleashed by the artist’s comparison with him/herself and with his/her work.

For the third year in a row, the project confirms the collaboration between two of the finest cultural institutions on the Piedmontese territory, one public and one private: GAM and the Fondazione Spinola Banna per l’Arte, which continue to provide an arena for the exchange of ideas, of experimentation and analysis, also in the 2018-2019 edition, through workshops, conferences, performances, as well as a final exhibition and publication. Thus, the formula of the residency dedicated to young artists is consolidated, having been broadened in 2016/17 with the project Atlante Energetico by Elena Mazzi, the first artist-cum-tutor, and continued in 2017/18 with IperPianalto by Andrea Caretto and Raffaella Spagna.

Through a shard project, the theme is proposed by an artist identified by both institutions in the role of tutor. The artist is invited to outline a working plan to be implemented between autumn and spring in both venues.

The residential workshops will be staged in three moments: the first designed to familiarise tutor and participants with one another, outlining the research and analysis of the theme proposed by the tutor, with the intervention of international experts; the second aimed at providing feedback on the projects developed by the participants; and lastly the third working towards the publication of a volume and the staging of an exhibition at the Fondazione Spinola Banna per l’Arte. Furthermore, throughout the year, activities and conferences will be staged at GAM, giving the chance to the chosen artists to come face to face with experts and scholars from various disciplines.

The selection committee which will follow every stage of the programme is made up of Riccardo Passoni and Elena Volpato for GAM, and Gianluca Spinola, Luisella Molina and Francesca Doro for the Fondazione Spinola Banna per l’Arte.

For the year 2018/19 the artist-cum-tutor invited is Maria Morganti
with a project entitled Diari tra diari.

MARIA MORGANTI (Milan 1965). She lived for a few years in New York, and now lives in Venice.

Her work revolves around the experience of colour, meant as the matter and trace of existence. Her works are sedimentations of time, presented in the form of chromatic diaries. What she produces every day in the isolation of her studio on the basis of a precise rhythm, one colour a day, is then placed in relation with the outside world, with other realities, in the attempt to trigger contact between her own  interiority and the shared space.

Her interaction with artists has always been very important and intense: she has frequented studios, shared living and working spaces, has taken part in residencies and curated workshops. From 2002 to 2012, initially in her studio in Venice and then at the Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa, she coordinated the Incontri del mercoledì. In 2007, she curated a workshop at the DOCVA Via Farini in Milan, and in 2012 she carried out an intensive workshop of Visual Knowledge for the CLASAV Master Course of the IUAV University of Venice.

Maria Morganti considers ‘holding exhibitions’ a complementary part of the creative process. What she produces in solitude in her studio stands in relation to other spaces, being reactivated in an ever-changing manner and forever producing new meaning. Since 1983, she has exhibited in Italy and abroad in private and public spaces, both those officially designed for art and otherwise, in some cases even exhibiting in the open air. Her first institutional solo show was curated by Angela Vettese at the Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa in Venice in 2006. Since then, she has exhibited in various other exhibition spaces, museums and institutions such as Via Farini, Leporelli, curated by Milovan Farronato, Milan, 2007; Diario cromatico curated by Chiara Bertola, Fondazione Querini Stampalia, Venice 2008; Museo di Castelvecchio, L’unità di misura è il colore a curated by Chiara Bertola, Verona, 2010; Casa Testori, Giardini squisiti with Massimo Kaufmann, Novate Milanese (MI), 2014. In 2017, she opened a permanent installation curated by Chiara Bertola in the café of Mario Botta for the Fondazione Querini Stampalia of Venice.

She has taken part in numerous group shows, of which the latest include: L’emozione dei colori nell’arte, curted by Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, Marcella Beccaria, Elena Volpato and Elif Kamisli, GAM/Castello di Rivoli, Turin, 2017; Èdra, tutta l’Italia è silenziosa, Reale, curated by Davide Ferri, Accademia di Spagna, Rome, 2015; Autoritratti, Iscrizioni del femminile nell’arte italiana contemporanea, curated (among others) by Francesca Pasini, MAMbo, Bologna, 2013; La fortezza plurale dell’arte, curated by Giacinto Di Pietrantonio and Umberto Palestini, Fortezza Borbonica, Civitella del Tronto, 2012; Quadriennale, Rome 2009. She has designed various artist’s books and other kinds of publication that she considers places in which to share experiences with others. In 2018 various books of hers have been published: a Monografia edited by Stefano Arienti; Pondus, published by 100 Copie Edizioni and Nel buco, published by Les Cerises Edizioni: an artist’s book for children. In 2017, she collaborated with Jean-Luc Nancy on Il colore succede, non si provoca, published by Corraini Edizioni; in 2016 with her son Piero Pes in Mi aiuti a capire cosa sto facendo?, Fortino Editions; in 2014 with Matteo Nucci in I diari di Via dell’Oca e di Via della Penna and in 2006 with Barry Schwabsky in Storia di un quadro, published by Corraini Edizioni. In 2010, she published Un diario tira l’altro with Corraini Edizioni.

  • 23 January 2019 at GAM: Cristina Baldacci (curator) in a conversation with an artist from the international scene who has worked with diary formulas
  • 13 February at GAM: Conference with Nadia Fusini (literary critic, essay, translator and writer)
  • 6 or 13 March at GAM: Conference with Roberto Beneduce (Psychiatrist /Anthropologist)
  • March/April Conference on the diary form in music (speaker to be decided) at GAM 
  • From 8 to 12 April second residential workshop at the Fondazione Spinola Banna per l’Arte (the artist and curator Stefano Arienti will be present to offer his contribution and tutoring on the finalisation of the project and exhibition)
  • 13 April visit to the Fondazione Archivio Diaristico Nazionale in Pieve di Santo Stefano (Arezzo – Tuscany)
  • 6-7 June setting up of the final exhibition at the Fondazione Spinola Banna per l’Arte
  • 8 June opening of the exhibition and presentation of the publication at the Fondazione Spinola Banna per l’Arte

 

CANDIDACIES

In order to take part in the call, paper or digital documentation must be sent comprising:

  • an updated curriculum vitae;
  • a selection of at least 10 works;
  • an artistic statement;
  • a letter of motivation.

Participation in the call requires a good knowledge of written and spoken English and a high degree of seriousness.

Each of the five artists chosen will be asked to pay a participation fee of €200.

Participants will be evaluated by the Selection Committee, which will choose the five artists.

The selected artists will be hosted throughout the residency periods (accommodation and board) in the rural estate that houses the Fondazione Spinola, converted into a multifunctional space with bedrooms, studios and an exhibition room, made available to the artists throughout the residency periods.

Each of the five selected artists will be awarded a maximum of €2,200 (gross) by way of reimbursement for travel costs and the production of works, which will be allotted in two payments by bank transfer, following acceptation of the participants of the contract of project participation.
