GAM also possesses an important collection of photographs, ranging from the 19th century to the present day.
One of the rarest works is an 1839 daguerreotype by Enrico Federico Jest portraying the Church of Gran Madre di Dio in Turin, and, as regards the Museum’s historical works, the important group of ancient architecture photos by Carlo Nigra.
As far as the city of Turin is concerned, the photographs by Riccardo Moncalvo have become part of the considerable Stefano Bricarelli and Mario Gabinio funds, held in the Photo Archive. Over the course of recent decades, the collection has grown with works by major 20th-cenury Italian photographers like Nino Migliori, Mimmo Jodice, Gabriele Basilico, Paolo Mussat Sartor. This was then further enriched by acquisitions thanks to the Fondazione CRT per l’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, with the addition of works by Luigi Ghirri, Mario Giacomelli, Ugo Mulas, Ferdinando Scianna, Uliano Lucas, and Aurelio Amendola.
As regards the latest generations of artists, photos by Bruna Biamino, Enzo Obiso, Paola De Pietri, and others have also become part of the collection.
Works by international photographers are also present such as Irving Penn’s platinum prints, including his celebrated Portrait of Picasso, 1960, or the 1973 reprint of the experimental Photograms and Photoplastics made in the 1920s byLászló Moholy-Nagy.
