The GAM of Turin from 21 October 2021 to 9 January 2022 presented in its exhibition spaces the immersive and participatory installation SINFONIAby Alessandro Sciaraffa curated by Sara d'Alessandro Manozzo.
Intended for the permanent collection of the GAM, the work won the Italian Council tender (IX edition, 2020), a program for the international promotion of Italian art of the Directorate General for Contemporary Creativity of the Ministry of Culture.
After being exhibited for the first time at the GAM, SINFONIAmoved to the halls of the TSE Art Destination Foundation and Gallery, in Nur-Sultan, one of the most dynamic realities in the contemporary art scene of Kazakhstan, which will celebrate the work and the artist with three dedicated days: on Tuesday 29 March Alessandro Sciaraffa will hold a conference at the KazNUA – Kazakh National University of Arts organized by the Italian Embassy in Kazakhstan, on Wednesday 30 March the inauguration of the exhibition at the TSE Art Destination and on Thursday 31 March the artist will a talk directly in the exhibition space.
Here is what the Ambassador of Italy, Marco Alberti said about the initiative: The artist's hands that shape the material and "model" the natural elements, making them an expressive form. With his works, the Turin artist Alessandro Sciaraffa expresses the idea of art as a vehicle for a profound and spiritual connection between the individual and the universe, between matter and spirit. "Sinfonia" expresses, in a multimedia way, the evocative power of natural elements, particularly felt in Kazakhstan; at the same time, it explores the relationship with technology as a source of expressive opportunities.
This project, which is part of the international activities of the Fondazione Torino Musei, sees the involvement and support of the Italian Embassy in Nur-Sultan and strengthens the collaborations between our museums and the cultural realities of the Kazakh capital, with a significant tribute to the Diplomatic Relations between Italy and Kazakhstan which celebrate their 30th Anniversary in 2022.
These are the words of the Director of the TSE Art Destination Foundation and Gallery Baurzhan Sagiyev: The installation by Alessandro Sciaraffa reminds us that the language of art and the artistic gesture have no borders and distances. The work immerses us in a world of disembodied and ephemeral emptiness where everyone can experience non-being while remaining part of something greater. This work is both mysterious and understandable, especially for the descendants of the ancient nomads who worshiped the sun, Father Sky and Mother Earth, and who performed rites that included practices of interaction with the sounds of nature and with instruments that imitated them. Here a work created in Italy finds its audience in Kazakhstan and engages in a true dialogue about the eternal.
SINFONIA is composed of a gong, a sound system and a video projection on a mirrored screen inserted in a dark space to unite two of the fundamental themes in Sciaraffa's work: the primitive sound of the gong and the observation of the northern lights.
